Not sure what trans you have installed in your car, however, see if the entry below from 4L60e common problems fits what you are experiencing. I also don't understand why the "mechanic" wouldn't have replaced the filter if he was "servicing" the trans.

29. Car acts like it's in OD in neutral, car is locked stationary in R, engine feels loaded in P, all four forward positions work fine: Internal crossleak feeding the forward clutches all the time. Most likely a cracked input housing. R&R required. Car can safely be driven gently in forward gears until the repair.
R&R = Remove & Repair (or Rebuild) = Transmission must be removed to fix the problem and may have to be rebuilt or replaced.

Thanks mate yep it's a 5 speed auto. From what you have said about the gears it sounds like a rebuild. Would you know anyone in perth who does transmission rebuilds for thev5 speed the cheapest quote I got was 4500 to 5000 I can pay it but it will be a month before I can get the money. And why are the so expensive to fix is it parts or labour mate

And just a quick question will a vy motor and gear box fit in a vz without to much stuffing around or is there motor and gear box u can get to for a vz that doesn't have a sealed gear box. I believe it's one of the best designed cars holden have made. But epic fail on the alloytech motor and gearbox. Like me old man always said simple is best

I'm definitely not going back to my mechanic I was getting service vehicle soon fault on my dash as I've said in previous posts it went to the mechanic late last year in October. Come back with the fault still on the dash. Thanks to u guys worked out it was the oil pressure sensor. He couldn't even sort that. I'm sure he was taking the pi**. Does anyone know of a decent auto transmission rebuilds that don't cost so much. Or would it be worth trying for a new one

All auto builds cost a heap. They are highly specialised.

Unfortunately you can end up paying someone a lot to do what turns out to be a **** job.

“Decent” and “not cost much” are not going to come together.

There is only do or do not.

I’d budget for $5-$6k.
