Yes, you need to put a little oil on the seal lip as well as the surface it will run on.

I was taught to use grease by my diff builder.

Grease would work too. I normally just use what ever is going to be running against the seal in normal operation but anything as long as it doesn't run dry is the aim of the game.

Maybe your diff guy likes grease because it has better staying power than oil which is preferable if you don't know how long a diff will sit around.
