Yes much quieter without that god awful noise, took the gear off the front of the balance shaft also because i reckon that the rear bearing is knackered and contributed to the noise and just for the record for anyone else wondering, haven't noticed any vibrations or anything from the balance...

Hey mate, was too tired and frustrated last night to work out the oil pump drive was stopping me from getting the timing cover on, fresh eyes this morning and got it all sorted and shes now running with no bloody noises! Thanks for all the info and advice champ :) Cheers

UPDATE: Did a little cleaning of the old gasket etc this morning, got everything ready, about to remove the old timing set and what do you know?!?! I have every socket but the 28mm i need to get the bloody thing off! I spent the better part of the day hunting one of these buggers and finally...

And you would be correct sir, i just removed the tensioner and measured side to side movement with a measuring tape and it pretty much has the 25.4mm in movement if not a touch more so yes looks like i am now replacing the timing set, thanks for your advice bud i really appreciate it :) Cheers

No just gave her a little jiggle as is with tensioner still in place, minimal movement, i would have thought with the tensioner released there would be a fair amount of movement wether the chain is old or new as the tensioner is just that, to tension the extra slack in the chain? Cheers

Well timing cover is off and this is what i found Tming chain has minimal slack and the tensioner looks ok so i am now assuming that the horrid noise is coming from the rear bearing of the balance shaft, i will be taking the gear off the front of the balance shaft so it is no longer operable...

Thanks for the info mate, yes i think i will just go with a stock timing set to make things easier if i find thats the issue however if the balance shaft is the issue i know it may not cause any harm apart from the noise for a while but to be honest the noise is quite embarrassing and makes me...
