Belated response I know - been busy! But today I fixed it. How anyone can change over the starter motor without removing the manifold and a pile of other stuff I don't know, but at least I got the metal shield off with tips offered here, and found that the nut securing the main supply cable...

An interesting lead. So what voltage should I be seeing at two points? And am I right in saying that cable replacement alone was sufficient? I'm confident the battery is not the problem, as I replaced it and got the same result, so some connectivity issue is probably correct.

My VZ has a good battery, a big bugger, at 640CCA, and yet the crank is difficult to turn over, so my thoughts are drifting from it being a weak battery to perhaps something, anything else. No matter the weather, the battery I have doesn't ultimately fail, I just have to try a few times...

After replacing the water pump yesterday plus full replacement of the coolant, the only thing I can't work out is how to drain out the overflow tank so I can fill with the new coolant. How is it done?

Car is up to 160k so by the sound of it it not such a bad thing then.

I mistakenly read the specs for a VY V6 instead of for a VZ, and so just changed the oil over with 20W-50 instead of the correct 10W-30. Anyone know if this is a major issue likely to cause me problems, or can I go with it until the next oil change?
